Have you ever heard anyone say, “I just need a better horse”. Have you ever thought this yourself? I’ve done this myself. Been watching someone who really has it all together with their horse and said, “I wish I had a horse like that”. In most cases though, if a person got a horse like that, in a short amount of time, the horse wouldn’t be like that, because they can’t ride like that.
I remember thinking that the horses I get to show now are a lot better than the first horses I had. Then the thought came to me that, those horses were just as good as I was. You see, the best way to have a better horse is to become a better horseman.
I’ve seen it happen many times where someone buys a well trained horse, and after a while the horse is just like the last horse they had. This is because the rider isn’t doing anything to improve their skills. If you’re not trying to learn more and improve, you can buy the best horse in the world, and soon the horse will be operating at your level.
The good news is we live in the age of information. Now days we have so many resources available to us, it’s fairly easy to get help. There are books, videos, and many websites with lots of information readily available for us to access.
There are also many good trainers out there who are more than willing to help. I think if someone has spent the money to buy a well trained horse, it’s well worth it to take a few lessons to learn how to operate your new horse.
Another thing many people don’t realize is the time commitment involved. If you truly want to be good at what you do, you have to put in the time it takes. I can tell the people who are really committed, they find the time, where others find excuses.
I’ve been fortunate to meet a few people who have really been a great help to me on my horsemanship journey. One of these people is Al Dunning. I went to his Masters Clinic one year. I couldn’t believe how much I improved in a short amount of time. Al has a program I think everyone should know about. It’s called Team AD International.
Just by signing up for this program you get access to a video library and a bunch of great articles and blog posts. You can also ask questions, and get them answered.
If you sign up for the next level you can send videos to Al, and get his feedback on what’s going on with you and your horse. You should really check this out at teamadinternational.com.
It doesn’t matter what you do with your horse, there’s always room for improvement. Remember you need to put forth the effort. I’ve learned from my own experience, it’s worth every bit of time and effort you put in if your serious about becoming a better horseman.
I’m not saying you don’t have to start with a good horse, but the only way to have a better horse is to become a better horseman.
